History of Adelaide Airport

Beginning in 1921, Adelaide Airport operated out of a 24-hectare parcel in what was then known as Albert Park. It is now known as Hendon after it was purchased from the Northfield Aerodrome. The tiny post office was a conduit for mail between Adelaide and Sydney. To accommodate the rapid expansion of the aviation industry, Parafield Airport was built in 1927.

Parafield needed help to keep up with the demand for airport space. Thus, in January 1946, the current location of Adelaide Airport was chosen in West Torrens (formerly West Beach until 1991). Port Adelaide, which offered an alternate location with a seaplane facility, was ruled out because it was too far from the city center.

In 1954, construction began converting Parafield Airport into a private and military aviation facility, and flights began the following year. From the Commonwealth of Australia, Adelaide Airport Limited bought long-term leases for both Adelaide Airport and Parafield Airport in 1998.

The old "temporary" domestic and international terminals were replaced in 2005 by a dual-use $260 million facility. After the new domestic terminal opened, the old airport closed and was subsequently demolished. A new control tower was constructed west of the present terminal, while the old one was kept for continued use.
