History of Hobart Airport
Cambridge Airport, a smaller airport in the area, served the region before the new airport was built. Cambridge Airport quickly became inadequate for larger planes as the demand for air travel skyrocketed.
The new Llanherne Airport was announced by Prime Minister Ben Chifley in June 1948. It was thought that Australia's southernmost airport would provide a great home base for big planes delivering supplies to Antarctica, given the country's ongoing fascination with the icy continent.
In 1956, Hobart Airport began operating as the city's primary airport for regular public transportation. An earlier terminal building, located at the current terminal's southeastern end, was constructed in 1957, with two freight hangars, a fuel depot, a timber weather station, and the airport administration office and works facility. The Federal Government expanded and improved the runway in 1964 so that jet planes could use it.
In 1985, the runway was lengthened again to accommodate superjumbo planes like the Boeing 747 and the Antonov 124. Official openings occurred in 1976 for the domestic terminal building and 1986 for the international terminal. The airport was "corporatized" by the federal government in January 1988, when the Federal Airports Corporation was established.

Located in southeastern Tasmania on the estuary of the River Derwent, Hobart is the southernmost capital city in Australia. Mount Wellington, at 1,271 meters, is the tallest structure in the city. Most of the city's coastline is made up of reclaimed land, although its harbor is the second-deepest natural port in the world.
Greater Hobart is a term used to distinguish the urban center from the City of Hobart, one of the five local government areas that make up Tasmania's capital city. It enjoys a comfortable maritime climate with moderate temperatures.
Hobart is the second-oldest capital in Australia, behind Sydney, New South Wales; it was established in 1804 as a British penal colony. The whaling industry multiplied to become an essential economic factor. Historically, Hobart was the primary whaling port in the Southern Ocean. Since the abolition of transportation for criminals in the 1850s, the city has expanded.
Mining, agriculture, and other fundamental industries fueled an economic boom around the turn of the 20th century. Immigration helped compensate for the decline in the male labor force caused by the wars. Besides being the starting point for Australian and French Antarctic activities and a popular tourist destination, Hobart is now Tasmania's administrative and financial center.
