"Artspace Mackay becomes a part of a system of excellent regional galleries across Queensland, many of which are located in repurposed structures in cities like Cairns, Townsville, Gladstone, and Brisbane.
On the other hand, Artspace Mackay is located in a brand-new structure on a 'greenfield' site outside the city's central business district, in a somewhat austere environment of isolated civic buildings.
Because of its location, the building was designed to seem like a sculpture and serve as a focal point for the city's government district. However, the statue has discernment.
The connecting foyer is envisioned as a transparent multi-use space with views of the preserved natural landscape.
Two key goals are served by the building's angular layout and geometry. The first is to improve the diagonal path that most people follow from the main intersection to the library and administration offices.
The second and more crucial is to generate perspective changes within, giving the appearance of a more extensive and more complex set of spaces than was initially envisioned in brief.

Architects didn't have to restrict themselves to a specific architectural genre while employing the Art Deco style. The mall also housed movie theaters, stores, and motels. Mackay has a very different type of architecture compared to other Queensland cities.
Mackay has the best collection of art deco structures in Queensland, despite being inhabited in the 1860s. Most of the city center's buildings were built in the first three decades of the 20th century.
Commonly used decorative elements include:
Sunbursts and fountains represented the beginning of a new era.
Symbols of speed, power, and flight represented the exciting new developments in transportation and communication.
Geometric shapes represented the machine and technology age that was thought to solve all future problems.
There was an odd interest in the history of ancient Egypt and Central America.
