History of Perth Airport

Maylands Aerodrome and Langley Park on the city waterfront served as the city's primary civilian airfields before the inauguration of the Perth Airport. At the end of the 1930s, it became apparent that the Maylands Aerodrome couldn't accommodate the most significant and fastest aircraft.

The Department of Civil Aviation was responsible for the initial site selection and plan preparation. Buying and reserving the property for the new airport began in 1938. The land that would become the abandoned Dunreath Golf Course in Guildford was initially handed to local resident John Scott by Governor James Stirling.

As World War II broke out before civil aviation operations began, the facility was remodeled for military use. It became RAAF Station Guildford, a temporary base for the Royal Australian Air Force and the United States Navy. From February 1943, it served as home to the No. 85 Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force.

While the airstrip was first used by the military, civil services, including those run by Qantas Empire Airways and Australian National Airways (ANA), began operating there in 1944. Despite strong opposition from military authorities concerned that civilian operations might compromise the site's security and camouflage, the project went ahead.

Since the more significant types of aircraft in use by the two airlines at the time could not be accommodated by Maylands due to its small grass airport, lack of passenger facilities, and approaches being problematic due to neighboring industrial infrastructure, the government approved the transfer.

The first regular commercial service between the airport and Adelaide was provided by ANA, using Douglas DC-3 aircraft. For its first flight, Qantas used a modified Consolidated B-24 Liberator that had been granted to the airline by the British government and which had arrived in Perth on June 3, 1944, to make the journey from Perth to Ceylon and back on June 17.
