History of Townsville Airport

South of the Ross River, in the town of Murray, the first airport was built in the 1920s in the Thuringowa Shire. In 1930, the Civil Aviation Branch permitted it to operate as a civil airport. The airport was never fully functional because the land was swampy for most of the year. There was only enough space for a single runway in the east-west direction.

In 1938, a more visible location on the Town Common was chosen within Townsville, close to Ingham Road and the North Coast Railway. The construction of the new Townsville Airport opened to the public in 1939 with two dirt runways.

The military needed locations in northern Australia for airfields. Rapidly, plans were drawn to make Townsville Airport a larger Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) base, accommodating three additional fighter squadrons. A single squadron was retained, and in early 1940, RAAF Base Townsville was established next to the civilian airport.

The Number 24 Squadron used CAC Wirraways and was the first active unit to station itself at the facility in 1940. By the following year, the airfield had been significantly enlarged to accommodate the bombers and transport planes of the US Army Air Corps, which had been sent to the Philippines to bolster its defenses.

The runway in the southeast was expanded to 1,500 m and paved to accommodate the larger planes. Nearing completion in early December 1941, the Pacific War broke out.

There was a significant expansion of the defense installation and the construction of five more military airfields in the vicinity of Townsville throughout 1942.

Because of the proximity to the stockyards owned by the wholesale butchers Garbutt Brothers, RAAF Base Townsville was nicknamed RAAF Base Garbutt.

Despite being renamed from its pre-war status to "Townsville Airport," the civilian airport remained open and functional during the conflict. In 1951, RAAF Garbutt Base was renamed RAAF Townsville.
